(I am often logged in, with the Enter sound on, but am Invisible as chat-admin, so come in and send me a sound to see if I am there.)Welcome to the Dallas Area! (Virtually, anyway. Except
for those of us who already live here.)
You may pull up some a bench or some grass, set yourself, your questions and
your ideas down and join in.
This is a Chat room for those interested in Dealey Plaza history, Dallas
history and the JFK Assassination, for the most part. However, you may also use
it for any subject you want.
It is currently an Parachat Chat page, with a limit of 500 users. Handles
are allowed, but your real name must be given so thatpeople know who they are talking to. Administrator (chat-admin) is able to BAN you if the rules are not followed. Keep it clean, keep the insults down.
It is a FREE chat service for you. But I do pay for it each year, so I may run topic related ads in a minor, non-imposing
way. (If any of you have an event, site, journal, paper, or book you want to
promote, eMail me.)
Remember that there is no 'flaming' and harassing unless it is known that you
are already friends (and THEN be careful so people not knowing you realize you
ARE friends). No obscenity or other offensive behaviour allowed!!!

Simple Chat Instructions
SYSTEM: This software is PARACHAT. It is a JAVA based system, and will check your browser to see if you are JAVA enabled when you first try to attach. If you are using Windows XP or Windows 2000, it will upgrade or install JAVA software that allows you to use most of the features. If you have an older operating system, such as my Windows 98 at home, it might allow you to access using Parachat-Lite, which will still let you access without all of the "bells and whistles". It will still give you a warning, but you can still access without the latest JAVA update.
USAGE: This Chat room is available to all users. It can be used by members of the Dallas Historical Society, Researchers of the JFK Assassination, or any individual who just needs a chat room. I do have the ability to turn any user off, or "ban" them; however, I have no desire to play Referee to you people. You are all assumed to be Adults so simply act like it.
YOU MUST LEAVE THE DEALEYPLAZA.US WEB PAGE UP THE ENTIRE TIME YOU ARE IN A CHAT SESSION! Closing it will log you out. But you may open other windows and do other things while chatting.
LOBBY versus ROOMS: When you first come in, you are automatically in the LOBBY. Always click on the
Show Rooms button first, to make sure that there are no other rooms that have the subject matter you are looking for. If there is another Room, you can right-click on that Room and then select Join Room. This will then take you out of the Lobby and into the Room you want to be in.
You may also Create a Room. First click on the Roam menu item on the top of the Chat box. Then click on Create Room. Then click on the Creation button. You should then put in the first box a name for your Room that your expected "guests" will recognize (such as "JFK Medical", or "DHS Brockles Recipe", "Angels Room"). The system will then set up the room, and you will automatically be logged out of the LOBBY and you will JOIN the new room.
Of course, with you no longer in the LOBBY, anyone signing in and looking for you will not see you, unless they do the Show Rooms procedure. So you might want to use the same Room name, or agree to it before hand.
You may just simply talk in the LOBBY, BUT PLEASE DON'T DO SO IF SOMEONE AHEAD OF YOU IS IN THE LOBBY TO WELCOME PEOPLE (see PASSWORDS below).
PASSWORDS: Any user may add a password to their created room, when they create it.
(This does not stop the sysop, but will stop anyone else.) This keeps LURKERS (unidentified users) from sitting in on conversations when you don't want them to. However, if you do set a PASSWORD, you should let people coming in know what that PASSWORD is ahead of time. Another option is to have someone signed into the LOBBY to WELCOME any user coming in. They should then go into a PRIVATE chat with that user (right click on the User's Name in the box on the left, and then click on PRIVATE CHAT). In there you can direct them to the proper Room and give them the PASSWORD for that room.
A third option is to click on Roam in the Menu, then on User Search. Then click on Users button and type in the user-id you are looking for, followed by Find (partial will work). You can then highlight that User in the bottom box, and press Chat which will connect you in a PRIVATE CHAT with that user, wherever she/he is. You can then get the PASSWORD to join.
MULTIPLE LOGONS: it is possible to do multiple log-ins. Simply open a new Browser, and go to dealeyplaza.us (here is a link that will open a new window for you:
dealeyplaza.us). You can then sign in using a different Username. That way you can participate in multiple Chats, or monitor the LOBBY to WELCOME people (just don't get confused).
SOUNDS: you may go into Options on the menu, and enable
Sound on Enter,
Sound on Exit,
Sound on New Text.
In these you must click BOTH the On option to turn it on, as well as click the Sound from the list that you want to use.
Using these sounds allows you to ignore the Chat window when nothing is happening. You can then do other things not involving sounds, and when you hear the Sound you selected you will know that someone has posted a message, or Entered or Exited your Room. (Can get annoying though, so maybe you should turn it off while actively Chatting.)
SENDING SOUNDS AND ICONS: you have the buttons on the bottom of the page, where you can make your text Bold, Italics, send Smiley Face Icons, Send Sound, etc. Please keep these to a minimum, AS THEY CAN BE VERY ANNOYING!
I do suggest you pick a special color for your text (another of the buttons), as it makes it easier for your fellow Chat room people to see your comments mixed with others. Everyone having black can get confusing.
THE MESSAGES ARE NOT LOGGED! You cannot see what someone says when you are out of that room, and nothing is available for Google or other search engines to look at. It is just like Instant Messaging. If you want to save a conversation, you can highlight it and hit your Copy key (CTRL-C) to put it in your clipboard, where you can paste it into another application.
I think this covers most of the things you might need. It is really pretty simply once you get in there and start using it. But eMail me if there are any questions.
